Jindal J4 vs SS 202: Difference, Composition, Cost & Which to Choose (India)

The 20-second answer: Jindal J4 and SS 202 are both low-nickel chrome-manganese (Cr-Mn) 200-series austenitic stainless steels built for dry, indoor use. SS 202 is the standardised AISI/UNS grade: UNS S20200, 17–19% chromium, 4–6% nickel, per ASTM A240. Jindal J4, on the other hand, is Jindal Stainless's own copper-bearing economy grade, made for utensils and cookware. Pick between them based on the job, the finish and today's rate. For anything wet, outdoor or coastal, move up to 304. That's the whole j4 vs 202 stainless steel story, and it settles the j4 vs 202 difference in a single line: these are two close cousins in the same low-nickel family, and copper is the one visible difference in chemistry.

Whether you write it as j4 vs 202, j4 vs ss 202, ss j4 vs ss 202, jindal j4 vs 202, jindal j4 vs ss 202, or flip it to 202 vs j4, the difference between j4 and 202 stainless steel really boils down to three things: copper, nickel and the job at hand. At the Ajmeri Gate trade counter, the question usually lands in hinglish instead, j4 aur 202 me kya farak hai, j4 aur 202 me antar, j4 ya 202 konsa achha hai, or j4 ya 202 kaun sa better. The phrasing changes. The answer doesn't.

This comparison covers Jindal Stainless (JSL) flat products only. Jindal SAW, JSW Steel, Jindal Steel & Power (JSPL) and SAIL Salem aren't included. J4 is Jindal's own proprietary 200-series grade. 202, by contrast, is a standardised AISI/UNS grade that Jindal also produces.

J4 vs 202 at a glance: the decision table

The front-loaded verdict on j4 or 202 which is better (also asked as which is best j4 or 202, is j4 better than 202 and is 202 better than j4): neither grade wins outright. Both suit dry, indoor jobs. J4 is Jindal's utensil-focused grade; copper gets added for forming. 202 is the standard grade, and it's usually the one picked for indoor railings, furniture and decorative work. Neither belongs in wet or coastal service.

Is J4 the same as 202? (identity and equivalent grade)

No. Is j4 same as 202, or is j4 a 202 grade? Neither. J4 is a Jindal Stainless trade name within its J-series of economy austenitics. It carries no AISI, UNS or IS number, so there's no official j4 equivalent grade. Any listing that assigns J4 a UNS number is simply wrong. Its closest standardised relatives sit in the 200-series Cr-Mn family: 201, 202 and 204Cu.

What is j4 stainless steel, exactly? It's a low-nickel Cr-Mn austenitic grade, where manganese, nitrogen and copper take over most of the role nickel would normally play. Jindal developed it with utensils, cookware and furniture in mind. For the complete specifications, see the Jindal J4 grade datasheet.

What is ss 202? It's the standardised Cr-Mn-N grade (AISI 202 / UNS S20200 / EN 1.4373), with chromium at 17–19%, nickel at 4–6% and manganese at 7.5–10%, as specified under ASTM A240. Jindal Stainless also rolls it. See the 202 grade properties.

On paper, the two aren't interchangeable. Write the exact grade on your purchase order, and the mill test certificate (MTC) will confirm it. For J4's place in the jindal j series j1 j2 j4 line-up (including j4 vs j1), see the Jindal J-series lineage.

J4 vs 202 composition and properties side by side

On j4 vs 202 composition, the j4 vs 202 chemical composition and, above all, j4 vs 202 nickel content, the 202 column follows the standard published limits per ASTM A240, mirrored by IS 6911. J4 isn't an ASTM A240 grade at all; it's a proprietary JSL chemistry. Its exact ranges follow Jindal Stainless published data instead, and the heat analysis for your particular material is printed right on the MTC. We give J4's role element by element, not by inventing numbers.

Element (wt %)Jindal J4SS 202 (UNS S20200)What it does
Chromium (Cr)Per JSL published data17.0–19.0Forms the passive film, the main corrosion-resisting element
Nickel (Ni)Low, the defining economy feature4.00–6.00Stabilises austenite; the costly, LME-linked element
Manganese (Mn)High, main nickel substitute7.50–10.00Austenite former that partly replaces nickel
Copper (Cu)Added (copper-bearing grade)Not specified (residual)Softens work-hardening and helps deep drawing, the key chemistry difference
Nitrogen (N)Present0.25 maxAdds strength and supports austenite
Carbon (C)Controlled, per MTC0.15 maxKept in check for formability and weldability
Si / P / SPer JSL published data1.00 / 0.060 / 0.030 maxResidual and process elements

On j4 vs 202 manganese, j4 vs 202 copper and j4 vs 202 chromium, both grades lean on high manganese plus nitrogen to stand in for nickel. Copper is where J4 breaks from the pack: it's a deliberate addition. That addition slows work-hardening, and because of it, J4 flows better in deep-drawn utensil bodies.

Mechanically, j4 vs 202 strength, j4 vs 202 hardness, j4 vs 202 formability and j4 vs 202 deep drawing all line up closely. Work-hardening is the main thing to watch on the press.

On j4 vs 202 weight and j4 vs 202 density, a J4 sheet and a 202 sheet of the same size and thickness come out to almost the same weight. What differs is the rate you pay per kg, not the number of kilograms. Run any sheet through the stainless steel weight calculator to check it yourself.

Corrosion, rust and magnetism

J4 vs 202 corrosion: which rusts faster?

On j4 vs 202 corrosion, j4 vs 202 rust and which rusts faster: both grades carry a comparable, moderate corrosion envelope, and both sit clearly below 304. No public JSL data ranks one firmly above the other, so we won't invent a winner. Both hold up fine in dry, indoor and mildly humid service. Tea-staining and eventual pitting hit both grades in coastal air, chloride-laden water, under acidic cleaners, and in constant wet duty. If the part will be washed down, sit outdoors, or face sea air, the honest answer is 304 or higher. It isn't a choice between J4 and 202.

J4 vs 202 magnetic: is J4 magnetic vs 202?

On the matter of j4 vs 202 magnetic and is j4 magnetic vs 202: both are austenitic, so neither is really magnetic when it's annealed. Bending, spinning or deep drawing can leave either one with a slight pull afterward. That's just normal cold-work behaviour, not a sign the material is fake. One consequence worth noting: a magnet can't tell J4 from 202. Want more on magnet myths? Check out how to identify real stainless with the magnet test.

How to identify J4 vs 202: genuine Jindal J4 kaise pehchane

On how to identify j4 vs 202, or genuine jindal j4 kaise pehchane: don't trust the magnet test, trust the paperwork. Buy through an authorized Jindal Stainless channel and check the MTC: heat number, grade, chemistry, and the coil or sheet marking. Most problems start with bazaar "200-series" material of unknown melt. See quality & mill test certificates.

J4 vs 202 price: which costs less?

On j4 vs 202 price, the j4 vs 202 price difference and j4 vs 202 per kg: both are low-nickel economy grades priced well below 304, because they carry far less nickel. J4 sits in the same low band as 201 and 202. On any given day the spread between them moves with the factors below, so we do not print a fixed j4 vs 202 rate. For the dated indicative levels, see today's indicative price list and the SS 202 sheet price page; the J4 rate is confirmed on RFQ. That also covers j4 vs 202 rate today and a j4 vs 202 price list.

Price factorEffect on the J4 vs 202 rate
Nickel / LME movementBoth are low-nickel, so they swing less than 304; 202's 4–6% Ni still tracks the market
Grade chemistryJ4's copper and 202's higher nickel each carry their own alloy cost
ThicknessThin gauges carry higher per-kg processing cost than thick plate
Finish2B, No.4, BA and mirror each add a different premium
QuantityNo minimum order, larger quantities get better rates

Which is better for utensils, kitchen, furniture and railings?

This is where most buyers end up. Both grades show up in j4 vs 202 for utensils, j4 vs 202 for cookware and j4 vs 202 for bartan comparisons, and both are used for dry indoor utensils. Jindal developed J4 specifically for utensils, and its copper content helps on pressed bodies. For very severe draws, 204Cu is worth considering too. So which one wins: j4 ya 202 konsa achha hai for your job? Check the table below.

ApplicationJindal J4SS 202Step-up grade
Utensils, cookware, bartan (dry use)Strong fit, Jindal's utensil-targeted gradeUsed204Cu for severe deep draws; 304 for wet/acidic food

For j4 vs 202 for kitchen work, j4 vs 202 for modular kitchen carcasses and j4 vs 202 for furniture, both work well indoors. See furniture & modular kitchens and kitchen equipment. For j4 vs 202 for railings, j4 vs 202 for gates and j4 vs 202 for decorative interiors, 202 is the usual pick for indoor jobs. Anything exposed to weather should move up, see railings & architecture. For utensil blanks and circles, see stainless steel for utensils & kitchenware.

Is j4 food grade? Is 202 food grade? Both are widely used for dry indoor kitchenware. For wet, dairy, acidic or food-processing contact, though, step up to 304 or 316. See what counts as food-grade stainless.
