SS Sheet vs ACP Sheet vs GI Sheet: Which Is Better for Cladding, Signage & Fabrication?

Short answer: stainless steel (SS) sheet lasts the longest. It's a non-combustible metal, shrugs off dents, and delivers the most premium finishes, but it carries the highest material cost. ACP (aluminium composite panel) is light and economical, good for large flat colour panels, yet its fire behaviour depends entirely on the core, and the coating ages over time. GI (galvanized iron) sheet is the cheapest option, strictly utility-grade, and starts rusting the moment its zinc layer is used up. Choose SS where life, fire safety, hygiene, or a premium look matter. ACP suits budget flat façades, but only with a verified fire-retardant core. GI is for hidden or utility work. That's the full ss sheet vs acp sheet vs gi sheet answer in one paragraph; the tables below carry the detail.

If you're asking acp aur ss sheet mein kya fark hai, the answer comes down to construction. ACP is two thin aluminium skins glued to a core of plastic or mineral material. An SS sheet, by contrast, is solid stainless metal all the way through. So on stainless steel vs acp, it's a trade-off. ACP wins on cost and weight. Stainless steel wins on lifespan and how it holds up in a fire.

Honest disclosure: Relinox supplies stainless only. We're an MoU partner of Jindal Stainless Limited (JSL), the stainless flat-products company, not JSW Steel, Jindal Steel & Power or Jindal SAW. We don't trade ACP or GI. So this comparison is written to help you choose, even when the answer turns out to be ACP or GI.

What each material actually is

SS sheet (stainless steel sheet)

A solid, homogeneous sheet made from an iron-chromium alloy, often with nickel added, carrying at least 10.5% chromium, per ASTM A240 and IS 6911. That chromium content forms a thin, self-healing passive oxide film all the way through the thickness, so there's no coating that can wear off. You'll find it sold under names like inox sheet, steel cladding sheet, and decorative or designer SS sheet. The 8x4 "chaddar" (1250×2500 mm) is the common size people ask for. For cladding and signage, thickness usually runs about 0.4–3 mm, though the full sheet range extends from 0.3 mm up through 12 mm and above.

ACP (aluminium composite panel)

ACP, sometimes called aluminium composite material (ACM) or just "composite panel," is two thin aluminium skins bonded to a core. That core is either polyethylene (PE core) or a mineral-filled fire-retardant compound (FR core), with A2-type non-combustible-core panels sitting at the top end. Panels usually come in 3 mm or 4 mm total thickness. It is not an insulated PUF/PIR sandwich panel, even if the trade sometimes calls it one. The stainless steel vs aluminium composite panel question (or stainless steel vs aluminum composite material / ACM, if you prefer that phrasing) really boils down to "solid metal vs thin-skin laminate." As for acp vs aluminium sheet: plain aluminium sheet is solid aluminium through and through, while ACP uses aluminium only for the outer skins.

GI sheet (galvanized iron / galvanised steel sheet)

GI sheet is carbon steel sheet coated with zinc, usually hot-dip galvanized, made to IS 277 or ASTM A653. Trade forms include GP sheet (galvanized plain), GC sheet (galvanized corrugated), "zinc sheet" in colloquial use, and PPGI (pre-painted, colour-coated GI). The zinc is sacrificial. It corrodes first to protect the steel underneath, and once it's used up the base steel starts to rust.

This is the head-to-head acp vs ss sheet table, and it covers the same rows you'd look for under acp sheet vs stainless steel sheet or acp vs gi sheet. It also answers the broader ss vs gi vs aluminium question, with aluminium standing in for the ACP skin.

Reading guide: when a row matters for your job (fire, life, dents, hygiene), SS usually wins it. Lowest first cost and lightest weight favor ACP or GI instead. On acp thickness 3mm 4mm vs ss sheet gauge: a 4 mm ACP panel carries only about 0.3–0.5 mm of aluminium per skin, so a 0.8–1.2 mm SS sheet ends up far stiffer for every mm of metal used. Check our SS sheet sizes and thickness chart for the gauge equivalents.

Corrosion & life outdoors: does ACP, GI or SS rust?

Does acp rust? No. Aluminium doesn't rust the way steel does, but the paint coating chalks and fades under UV, and cut edges can expose the bare core. Does gi rust? Yes, eventually. The zinc corrodes sacrificially, and once it's used up at cut edges, scratches, or in coastal and industrial air, the base steel starts to rust. Does ss rust? Stainless holds off rust thanks to its passive chromium-oxide layer, which re-forms after a scratch. It can tea-stain under harsh chloride exposure if the grade's wrong, and that's why coastal and industrial sites specify 316 (compare SS 304 vs SS 316).

On acp life span vs ss life: ACP life runs on the coating and the core underneath it, and manufacturers back that up through their own warranties. Properly graded stainless, by contrast, holds up for decades with nothing more than regular washing. On gi sheet life outdoor, it's a different story: it comes down to zinc coating mass and the local atmosphere. In dry inland air it does well; near the coast it fades fast. For the full comparison between stainless and galvanized, see our SS vs GI sheet compared guide, where both the ss vs gi sheet and stainless steel vs galvanized sheet questions get covered in depth.

Fire behaviour: is ACP fire safe, and is stainless steel fire resistant?

Is acp fire safe? That depends on the core. PE-core ACP is combustible, and the acp fire risk on tall buildings has been reported widely across the globe following façade fires tied to PE-core composite cladding. FR-core and A2-type non-combustible-core panels do far better in reaction-to-fire tests. The pe core vs fr core acp distinction is the single most important thing to check here. Ask for the panel's test classification: makers often cite frameworks such as EN 13501-1 or ASTM E84. Then confirm compliance with the National Building Code of India 2016, Part 4 (Fire and Life Safety), and check with your local fire authority too.

Is stainless steel fire resistant? Stainless steel is a non-combustible metal. It won't burn, won't add fuel to a fire, and won't drip, and it holds onto useful strength even at high temperatures. That's the simple ss non combustible answer. GI is also non-combustible, though a paint coat on PPGI can burn. No material is "fireproof" in every sense, so follow the project's fire design and code, not marketing terms.

Weight, strength & fabrication

On acp sheet weight vs ss sheet weight, ACP ends up the lightest per square metre, since most of its thickness is just low-density core. SS wins on density per millimetre, running roughly 7.9 to 8.0 g/cm³, but cladding and signage jobs typically use thin gauges. So the gap between the two sheets isn't as large as the raw density numbers suggest. For exact kg figures at any size and thickness, check our stainless steel weight calculator.

Strength is where SS pulls ahead. Solid stainless resists dents and impact far better than the thin skins of ACP, which can dent and "oil-can" on large flat panels. GI sits in between, but every dent or scratch exposes the steel underneath. Fabrication is where the differences really show up: SS shears, bends, laser-cuts and TIG/MIG-welds cleanly, provided you use stainless-specific tooling. ACP gets routed and folded into cassettes with light tools, and it's never welded. GI is sheared, bent and riveted; weld it and the heat burns off the zinc, leaving a spot that needs touch-up.

Finish & aesthetics

Stainless offers the widest range of true metal finishes: 2B and BA, No.4/hairline brushed, mirror, PVD gold, rose-gold and black, etched, embossed and water-ripple. ACP brings a broad spread of painted colours and printed wood or stone effects. GI stays utilitarian: plain or spangled zinc, or a PPGI paint coat.

  • mirror ss sheet vs acp mirror: mirror-finish SS is a polished metal surface that stays flat and reflective. Mirror-effect ACP is a coating, and coatings distort and scratch. See mirror finish SS sheets.
  • gold ss sheet vs gold acp / pvd ss vs acp gold: PVD-coated stainless carries a hard, thin-film colour on a metal base. Gold ACP is just paint. See PVD colour SS sheets and etched SS sheets.
  • ss hairline vs acp brushed: hairline SS has a genuine directional grain cut right into the metal. "Brushed" ACP, by contrast, is a printed or coated imitation. Finish codes get explained in SS finishes explained.

Maintenance & recyclability

On how to clean ss cladding vs acp: wash stainless cladding every so often with water and a mild detergent. On hairline finishes, wipe along the grain, and skip chloride or bleach cleaners and steel wool. Coastal and industrial sites need washing more often. ACP gets the same gentle treatment, but abrasives chew up its paint, and panels that have faded, chalked or delaminated must be replaced outright. GI, meanwhile, needs repainting whenever the zinc or paint coat gives out.

On acp vs ss recyclability / sustainability, stainless wins: it's fully recyclable and fetches high scrap value. ACP is a different story; you can only recycle it once the aluminium skins are stripped away from the core. GI, meanwhile, just goes back into the stream as ordinary steel scrap.

Cost: what you actually pay over the life

On acp vs ss cost, and the related acp sheet price vs ss sheet price question, the material cost order runs GI < ACP < SS. Stainless costs the most to buy, thanks to its chromium and nickel content. Over the life of a façade, signboard or wall, though, SS often avoids the panel replacement, recoating and repainting that ACP and GI need. So the cheapest sheet isn't always the cheapest job.

We don't quote prices on this page. For today's ss cladding sheet price per kg, check our indicative stainless steel price list; for the ss sheet 8x4 price for cladding by gauge, see SS sheet price by thickness. Relinox doesn't sell ACP or GI, so we can't help with an acp sheet price, an acp sheet price per sq ft, a gi sheet price per kg, an acp sheet dealer or an acp supplier near me. Please approach those makers and dealers directly.

Use-case verdicts: which sheet for which job?

  • acp vs ss for shop front / fascia: a low-rise fascia gets touched and looked at every day, so hairline or PVD stainless holds its finish; FR-core ACP is the cheaper route if budget forces the choice.
  • ss sheet vs acp for kitchen wall / wet area: stainless 304 can be washed down repeatedly and stays hygienic. ACP and GI simply aren't built for constant water and cleaning chemicals, see stainless steel for kitchen equipment.
  • ss vs acp for lift / elevator: cabins take knocks every day, which is why hairline or etched SS has become the standard choice, see stainless steel for elevators and lifts.
  • ss vs gi for ducting / enclosures: for dry, hidden ducting, GI remains the economical default. Kitchens, pharma, food areas and corrosive plant zones call for a switch to SS.

Signage: SS vs ACP vs GI

On ss vs acp for signage, most signage houses use both: ACP for the large flat backing board, stainless for the letters. The acp board vs ss board choice comes down to budget and lifespan. An ACP board is light and cheap, while an SS board holds up longer and takes premium finishes. For acp vs ss letters (or ss letter vs acp letter), stainless wins on crisp folded edges, mirror finish, gold-PVD and hairline faces, plus outdoor durability. ACP letters cost less but look flatter. GI belongs only in hidden frames, nowhere else. Looking for an ss sheet trader for signage or an ss letter sheet supplier? Check our stainless steel sheet for signage letters page.

Cladding: SS vs ACP (and GI)

On acp vs stainless steel cladding, the ss cladding vs acp cladding decision usually comes down to money versus lifespan. ACP works well for large, flat, budget-friendly colour facades, but only if a verified FR or A2-type core is used and the local code actually permits it. Stainless cladding earns its keep on facades and interiors where long life, dent resistance, non-combustibility and a metal finish justify the higher material cost.

For acp or ss for elevation on a shop or home front elevation (or, put plainly, elevation ke liye acp ya steel), the tradeoff is simple: SS lasts longer and won't burn, while ACP wins on price as long as the core is right.

As for gi sheet vs acp sheet for cladding, GI rarely shows up as visible cladding. It rusts once the zinc wears down. PPGI, though, is common on sheds and industrial walls.

ACP vs GI, and where SS vs GI fits

Choosing between the two non-stainless options, acp vs gi sheet comes down to a light, painted, flat panel (ACP) versus a cheap, fairly strong, zinc-protected steel sheet (GI). ACP has the better look and won't rust. GI costs less, won't burn, and suits roofing and hidden work better. Then there's gi chaddar ya ss chaddar: GI chaddar costs less but rusts once the zinc wears away; SS chaddar costs more, yet needs no coating at all. You'll find the full breakdown in our stainless vs galvanized comparison.

If you choose SS: which grade, finish & thickness?

which ss grade for exterior cladding 304 or 316? For urban exteriors, 304 is the default; for coastal and industrial air, 316/316L is the right call. A 430 sheet for indoor cladding works well and keeps costs down in dry interiors; compare SS 304 vs SS 430. 202 fits budget dry interiors too, but with caveats. Check SS 202 vs SS 304 for the details.

Thickness: cladding and signage work usually calls for thin gauges in the 0.4–3 mm band. Lighter gauges suit interior wall panels and letter faces; heavier ones hold up better outdoors and in high-traffic areas. Frequently asked questions

Acp sheet or ss sheet which is better?

Stainless steel sheet wins on long life, non-combustibility, dent resistance and premium finishes. ACP wins when you need low-cost, light, flat colour panels, but only with a verified fire-retardant core.

Which is better acp or stainless steel for a building front?

Stainless steel lasts longer, won't burn, and shrugs off dents. ACP costs less and weighs less. For high-rise façades, go with SS or a code-compliant FR/A2-core ACP. Skip PE-core entirely.

ACP ya SS sheet kaun sa better hai elevation ke liye?

SS sheet zyada chalti hai aur jalti nahi; ACP sasta hai, par uska core (FR ya PE) zaroor check karein. In short, SS for life and safety, ACP for budget.

Is ACP fireproof?

No panel is "fireproof." PE-core ACP is combustible; FR and A2-type cores hold up better in reaction-to-fire tests. Ask for the panel's test classification, and follow NBC 2016 Part 4 along with local fire rules.

Does ACP or GI rust? Does SS rust?

ACP's aluminium won't rust the way steel does, but its coating wears down over time. GI holds up only until the zinc layer gets used up, then rust sets in. SS keeps rust at bay through its passive layer; near the sea, go with 316.

Which is cheaper: SS, ACP or GI?

GI costs the least, ACP sits in the middle, and SS runs highest. Over the life of the job, though, SS often avoids the need for replacement and repainting down the road. Check our indicative price list for today's SS rate.

Which material is best for signboards and letters?

Stainless steel, whether mirror, PVD, or hairline, is the choice for letters and premium boards. ACP covers the flat backing boards. GI gets used only for hidden frames.

Which SS grade is best for exterior cladding?

304 works for most urban exteriors. For coastal or industrial sites, go with 316 or 316L instead. 430 is only suited to dry interiors.

Is GI better than stainless steel?

Only up front. GI costs less, but once the zinc wears away, it rusts; stainless needs no coating and holds up far longer. The full comparison is in our stainless steel vs mild steel guide.

Do you supply ACP or GI sheet?

No. Relinox only sells Jindal Stainless flat products: sheets, coils, plates and designer finishes.

Can I get genuine Jindal SS sheet with MTC, cut to size, delivered to my city?

Yes. We're a Jindal Stainless MoU partner: MTC comes with the material, cut-to-size is available on request, and there's no MOQ. Dispatch is ex-Delhi, with GST and freight extra, and we ship pan-India. Request a quote on the RFQ form.
