Is Stainless Steel Magnetic? Magnetic vs Non-Magnetic SS Grades Explained

Some stainless steel is magnetic and some isn't. Austenitic grades, 304, 316 and the 200-series (201, 202, J4), are essentially non-magnetic when annealed, but they can turn slightly magnetic after bending or forming. Ferritic (409, 430, 441), martensitic (410, 420) and duplex 2205 grades are magnetic. A magnet tells you the family, not the grade, the mill test certificate does.

Below: a straight grade-by-grade answer, why your SS may suddenly attract a magnet, and how to actually prove the grade you have bought.

This guide covers Jindal Stainless (JSL) flat products only. It doesn't cover Jindal Steel & Power, JSW or Jindal SAW.

Is stainless steel magnetic? (Short answer)

Is stainless steel magnetic? It depends on the family. Not on how "stainless" the steel is, and not on how good it is either. Ask it as is ss magnetic, ss magnetic or not, or the way it usually comes up at the trade counter, is steel magnetic stainless, you'll get the same answer every time: some grades are, some aren't. Does a magnet stick to stainless steel? On annealed 304 or 316 sheet, barely, if at all. On 430 or 409M, it grabs firmly. So when people ask does magnet stick to stainless steel in general, or will a magnet stick to stainless, the real answer is narrower than they expect. Only the magnetic families respond that way, or austenitic sheet that's been worked hard enough to change its structure.

In the Delhi market, the same question gets asked as ss me magnet lagta hai kya or steel magnet pakadta hai kya. The short answer: 300-series and 200-series sheet magnet nahi pakadta once it's annealed. Ferritic, martensitic and duplex grades, though, chumbak pakadte hain.

  • Non-magnetic (annealed): austenitic grades, covering 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 316Ti, 321, 310S, 301, 201, 202, 204Cu, Jindal J4 and the J-series.
  • Magnetic: ferritic (409, 409M, 430, 439, 441, 436), martensitic (410/410S, 420) and duplex 2205.
  • Slightly magnetic after work: that's just austenitic sheet that's been bent, deep-drawn, spun or roll-formed. It's normal, not a sign of a fake grade.

Magnetic vs non magnetic stainless steel: why the difference?

Are all stainless steels non magnetic? No, and that's the most common myth in the trade. Every stainless steel carries at least 10.5% chromium, but what makes stainless steel magnetic is its crystal structure (microstructure), set by the rest of the chemistry. That's why are some stainless steels magnetic and others aren't, and it's the whole difference between magnetic and non magnetic ss:

  • Austenite (face-centred cubic, FCC) is essentially non-magnetic. Nickel keeps steel austenitic at room temperature; in the 200-series, manganese and nitrogen pick up part of nickel's job. So, is austenitic magnetic? Not when annealed. That's precisely why austenitic stainless steel magnetic response only shows up after cold work.
  • Ferrite (body-centred cubic, BCC) is ferromagnetic. It's drawn to a magnet the same way mild steel is. Ferritic stainless steel magnetic behaviour is therefore permanent: 409M, 430 or 441 pull toward a magnet in every condition.
  • Martensite, the hard structure formed when 410/420 are hardened, is also ferromagnetic, so martensitic stainless steel magnetic behaviour is a given.
  • Duplex is roughly half austenite, half ferrite; the ferrite half makes it magnetic.

Engineers call this magnetic permeability. If it matters for your part, put it on the order itself. Don't trust a hand magnet to tell you.

Which stainless steel is magnetic? (Grade-by-grade table)

Which stainless steel is magnetic, and which stainless steel is non magnetic? Jindal stainless steel magnetic behaviour spans both kinds. Jindal Stainless rolls grades of both families, so "jindal ss magnetic or non magnetic" has no single answer. It depends on the grade on your MTC. In hinglish, kaunsa steel magnet nahi pakadta? The austenitic ones don't. Chumbak wala steel kaunsa hai? That would be ferritic, martensitic and duplex. The table below gives the full list of magnetic ss grades and magnetic stainless steel grades alongside every non magnetic ss grade. It's the quick answer to which ss is not magnetic.

Reading it by grade: is 410 magnetic and is 420 magnetic? Yes, both are martensitic. Is 409 magnetic, is 409m magnetic, is 439 magnetic and is 441 magnetic? Yes again; all four are ferritic. Is 430 magnetic? Also yes. For the choice between the two, read magnetic 430 vs non-magnetic 304.

Is duplex stainless steel magnetic, and is 2205 magnetic? It is, on account of its ferrite phase. For the duplex-or-316L decision, see duplex 2205 vs 316L. Is 321 magnetic or is 310s magnetic? Not in the annealed state, and 310S holds its non-magnetic character even after working. Is 301 magnetic? Not when annealed. Work it, though, and it picks up noticeable magnetism; that's exactly what it's designed for.

Is 316 magnetic?

Is 316 magnetic, is 316l magnetic, is ss 316 magnetic, no, not in the annealed condition. 316's higher nickel makes its austenite more stable than 304's, so after the same bending or drawing it usually picks up less magnetism. (Credit the nickel, not the molybdenum, molybdenum on its own favours ferrite.) Grade details: 316 stainless sheet and 316L low-carbon sheet; for the choice between them, see 304 vs 316 difference.

Is 202 magnetic? (and 201, J4, 204Cu)

Is 202 magnetic or is ss 202 magnetic? 202 is austenitic, with manganese and nitrogen standing in for part of the nickel, so it is generally non-magnetic when annealed. After cold work it may show a mild response, this varies with chemistry and how much the sheet was worked. The same answer covers is 201 magnetic, is j4 magnetic and is 204cu magnetic. A 202 magnet test therefore proves little: annealed 202 and annealed 304 both ignore a magnet. See SS 202 sheet, Jindal J4 grade, J-series 200-series grades, 202 vs 304 compared and J4 or 202?.

Is 304 magnetic?

Annealed 304 is essentially non-magnetic. Formed 304, though, can attract a magnet slightly at bends and drawn areas. If your real question is is ss 304 magnetic, ss 304 magnet test or does 304 stick to magnet because you doubt the material, read how to identify real SS 304.

Where magnetic grades are wanted: and where non-magnetic is specified

  • Induction cookware: is stainless steel magnetic for induction cooktop use? Only the magnetic grades work on induction. A magnetic ss for induction base is usually a ferritic grade such as 430, often clad or bonded to an austenitic body.
  • Magnetic holding: appliance panels and display boards that must hold magnets use ferritic sheet.
  • Low magnetic response: non magnetic stainless for electrical, MRI and instrument use is normally austenitic: 304, 316 or 310S. Where low magnetic response is critical, state the permeability requirement on the RFQ so the mill's data can confirm it.

Why is my stainless steel magnetic? (Cold work, welds, edges)

Why is my stainless steel magnetic when the shopkeeper said 304? Usually it comes down to how the piece was formed. Can stainless steel become magnetic? Yes, it can. Does cold working make stainless magnetic? For austenitic grades, the answer's yes. Bending, deep drawing, roll-forming, spinning of circles, shearing, all of these convert part of the austenite into strain-induced martensite, and that martensite is magnetic. That's the reason bending ss magnetic complaints keep coming up, why my ss sink is magnetic right at the corners, and why an ss utensil attracts magnet at the base radius or rim. The same logic explains sheet that's magnetic only at edges: the corners of ss sheet and the sheared edges are simply where the metal has been worked hardest.

Are stainless steel welds magnetic?

Are stainless steel welds magnetic? Often, a bit. Austenitic weld metal gets a small amount of delta-ferrite mixed in on purpose, to resist hot cracking, so an ss weld magnetic reading on the bead is normal. Solution annealing brings back the non-magnetic condition in cold-worked areas, where a drawing calls for it.

Is the magnet test reliable for stainless steel?

Ss magnet test reliable? Is magnet test accurate for stainless steel? No. A magnet sorts the family; it can't tell you the grade. Annealed 202 and annealed 304 both ignore a magnet. Cold-worked 304 may attract one. And 430 stainless and mild steel both attract strongly. is mild steel magnetic? Very, which is why an ss vs ms magnet check can't separate them (see stainless vs mild steel).

So the magnet test for stainless steel quality is a myth too. Does magnetic mean low quality ss? No. Magnetic stainless steel rust fears come from the same mix-up: does magnetic ss rust more? Magnetism has nothing to do with it. Corrosion resistance comes from chromium, plus nickel, molybdenum and nitrogen. Ferritic 430 is magnetic and genuinely stainless, though its corrosion resistance falls short of 304's. Compare the two in 304 vs 430: which to choose.

The bazaar version, magnet se asli nakli steel pehchan, or magnet chipakta hai to nakli hai kya, fails for the same reason. "Magnet nahi chipka" doesn't prove 304. "Chipak gaya" doesn't prove fake either. Want a check specific to 304? Use the is your 304 genuine? test guide.

What actually proves the grade? (MTC and chemical analysis)

How to check stainless steel grade without magnet? Paperwork and chemistry do the job. The mill test certificate (MTC) carries a heat number, and that number ties the coil or sheet back to the chemistry and mechanical results the mill recorded. Want an independent check instead? A lab spectro or PMI analysis reads the actual chromium, nickel, manganese and molybdenum content for an independent ss grade test.

Grades get their definition from chemistry and mechanical properties under ASTM A240 and IS 6911. Magnetism isn't part of either standard's acceptance test for grade. Material produced by Jindal Stainless conforms to the applicable standard, and the MTC is the proof of that.

Frequently asked questions

Is stainless steel magnetic?

It depends on the family. Austenitic grades (304, 316, 202) are essentially non-magnetic when annealed, while ferritic (409, 430, 441), martensitic (410, 420) and duplex 2205 grades are magnetic.

Which stainless steel is not magnetic?

Annealed austenitic grades: 304/304L, 316/316L, 321, 310S and the 200-series (201, 202, 204Cu, J4). 310S stays non-magnetic even when worked, while 304 can pick up slight magnetism after forming.

Why does a magnet stick to my stainless steel sink or utensil?

Deep drawing, bending or spinning converts part of the austenite into martensite, which is magnetic. It is normal at formed corners and edges and does not by itself mean the grade is wrong.

Is 316 stainless steel magnetic?

Not in the annealed condition. Its higher nickel keeps the austenite more stable, so it usually picks up less magnetism than 304 after cold work.

Is SS 202 magnetic?

202 is austenitic and generally non-magnetic when annealed; it may show a mild response after cold work, varying with chemistry and how much it was worked. A magnet can't tell 202 from 304, an MTC can.

Is the magnet test reliable to check stainless steel grade?

No. It only indicates the family: it can't separate 202 from 304, and cold-worked 304 may attract a magnet. Use the mill test certificate or a spectro/PMI test.

Does magnetic stainless steel rust more?

Magnetism doesn't cause rust; corrosion resistance comes from chromium, plus nickel and molybdenum. Ferritic 430 is magnetic and stainless, though its corrosion resistance is lower than 304's.

Is duplex 2205 magnetic?

Yes. Its microstructure is part ferrite, and ferrite is magnetic.

Is food grade stainless steel magnetic?

Food-grade suitability depends on grade, chemistry and finish, not magnetism. Magnetic 430 and non-magnetic 304 are both used in kitchens, see what makes SS food grade in our food-grade guide.

Are stainless steel welds magnetic?

Usually slightly. Weld metal on austenitic grades holds a little delta-ferrite to resist hot cracking, so the bead can attract a magnet.

SS me magnet lagta hai kya?

Annealed 304, 316 and 202 sheet hardly attracts a magnet, but 430, 409M, 410 and 2205 do. Formed or bent austenitic parts may attract slightly, and that does not mean the steel is nakli.

Can I order non-magnetic or magnetic SS sheet with an MTC from Relinox?

Yes. As a Jindal Stainless MoU partner we supply austenitic and ferritic grades with mill test certificates, ex-Delhi with GST and freight extra and no minimum order. Where low magnetic response is critical, state it on the RFQ form.

Do you dispatch outside Delhi?

Yes, we dispatch pan-India by road from Ajmeri Gate, Delhi. Share your delivery location on the RFQ form for the dispatch timeline and freight terms.
