Stainless Steel Sheet Buying Guide for Fabricators: 8-Step Checklist (Grade to Freight)

Short answer, how to buy stainless steel sheet for fabrication: fix the grade, finish, thickness and sheet size first. Decide whether you need full sheets, coil, patta or cut-to-size. Buy through an authorized Jindal Stainless channel. Insist on the mill test certificate (MTC) and a GST invoice with the HSN code. Then confirm the day's rate, freight and delivery terms before you pay. That's how to buy SS sheet, or how to purchase SS sheet for a regular job, without surprises, in the order a fabricator actually orders it.

This stainless steel sheet buying guide for fabricators is meant for workshops turning out kitchen equipment, railings, gates, tanks and ducting, plus resellers and purchase executives placing a first time SS sheet purchase. If you're buying stainless steel for the first time, work through the steps in order. If you buy regularly, treat the checklist table as a pre-payment audit instead. Either way, this SS sheet buying guide covers what you need to decide and check before paying for an SS sheet lot, the practical buying guide for fabricators that generic steel sheet buying tips tend to skip.

The 8-step SS sheet buying checklist

Run this SS sheet buying checklist (a stainless steel purchase checklist and procurement checklist rolled into one) before every order goes out. Purchase teams can treat it as a stainless steel sheet purchase checklist, and new buyers can use it as an SS sheet procurement guide.

SS sheet kharidne se pehle kya check kare? Grade, finish, thickness (mm mein, sirf gauge nahi), sheet size (8x4 ya 4x10), Jindal ka MTC with heat number, pakka bill (GST invoice with HSN), aur aaj ka rate plus freight. SS sheet kaise kharide: pehle requirement likhiye, phir authorized dealer se RFQ bhejiye. Steel sheet lene se pehle kya dekhe delivery par - film, scratches, edges, aur weight vs invoice.

Step 1: Which grade of SS sheet to buy for fabrication?

Which grade of SS sheet to buy for fabrication comes down to where the finished job will actually live: wet or dry, indoor or outdoor, food-contact or not, welded heavily or lightly. As per Jindal Stainless published grade data: 304 is the general-purpose austenitic grade. 316/316L adds molybdenum for chlorides and chemicals. 201/202/J4/204Cu are lower-nickel 200-series and J-series grades suited to cost-sensitive indoor work. 430/409M are ferritic grades, magnetic and nickel-free, for appliances and low-corrosion uses. Where welding is heavy, the L-grades are preferred.

Ducting, appliance panels, exhaust parts430 / 409M—Wet, chloride or outdoor dutySS 304 vs 430

Which SS grade for kitchen work? Go with 304 for anything that touches food or water, check the food grade stainless steel guide before you buy food grade SS sheet. For which SS grade for railing and which SS grade for tank work, the table above covers the default case. The comparison guides handle the trickier calls: 202 vs 304, 201 vs 304, J4 vs 304 and J4 vs 202. A few rules of thumb are worth keeping in mind. 304 vs 316: pick 316 once chlorides enter the picture. 202 vs 304: 202 is cheaper for indoor use, but it rusts sooner once things get wet. 304 vs 430: 430 is magnetic and costs less, yet its corrosion resistance falls well short. 316 vs 316L: thick welded sections call for the L grade. As for J4 vs 304 and J4 vs 202, J4 lands somewhere between the two and suits utensils and indoor fittings well. Still weighing the material itself, SS vs MS, SS vs GI or SS vs ACP? Read stainless steel vs mild steel and SS sheet vs ACP vs GI first. Specialist grades like 317L, 304H or 444 can be supplied against indent or on request.

Step 2: Choose the finish: which finish to buy, 2B or No.4?

Which finish to buy 2B or No.4? 2B is the default cold-rolled mill finish, and it's the right base for most fabrication work. No.4 (matt/brushed) suits visible surfaces where you don't want to polish after welding. On matt or mirror for fabrication, matt hides handling marks. Mirror looks premium, but it shows every scratch and needs careful film protection. Finish designations follow ASTM A480.

FinishLookTypical fabrication use
No.1 (hot-rolled, annealed, pickled)Dull, roughThick plate for tanks, structures, hidden parts
2BSmooth, semi-bright greyGeneral fabrication, tanks, sinks, base for polishing
BA (bright annealed)Bright, reflectiveAppliance trims, utensils, decorative panels
No.4 / mattBrushed, directional grainKitchen equipment, elevators, counters
HairlineLong, fine continuous grainLift cladding, architectural panels
Mirror, PVD colour, etchedDecorativeInteriors, signage, façades, see designer sheets

Full comparison: stainless steel finishes explained. With thick plate, it's usually the HR vs CR sheet choice that decides the finish. A No.1 plate is hot-rolled; see HR vs CR stainless sheet.

Step 3: Thickness (mm vs gauge) and sheet size

Order thickness in mm always, and treat gauge as a cross-check only. Workshops quote gauge loosely, and the gauge to mm conversion depends on which gauge table someone has in mind. The values below follow the standard SWG table used in the Indian SS trade; application thicknesses are typical, so confirm against your drawing.

ApplicationTypical thickness (mm)Approx. gauge (SWG)Note
Kitchen equipment panels, cladding0.6–0.924–20Thicker for work tops that take load
Kitchen work tops, sinks0.9–1.220–18Depends on frame support
Railing and gate sheet infill1.0–1.519–16Tubes and sections are separate items
Ducting, hoods0.6–1.024–19Per duct size and design standard
Small water and process tanks1.5–3.016–11Design by capacity and pressure
Base plates, heavy structures4.0–12 and above—Plate range; usually HR No.1

What thickness SS sheet for kitchen equipment? Most kitchen equipment runs in 0.6–1.2 mm. Thinner for panels and cladding, thicker where tops and sinks have to bear weight. Size is a separate question. The 8x4 SS sheet (1250×2500 mm, also called 4x8) is the market standard. 4x10 (1250×3050 mm) and 5x10 (1500×3000 mm) are also common market sizes, while coils and patta are sold by width. As for which size to buy, go with whatever nests your parts with the least scrap. A 3 m part needs a 4x10, not two 8x4 sheets joined. The full gauge and size chart sits at SS sheet sizes and thickness in India.

Step 4: Quantity, weight and form (sheet, coil, patta, cut-to-size)

Buy SS sheet by kg or by sheet? In the Indian trade, SS sheet is sold per kg and invoiced by weight, even when you order by number of sheets. So do an SS sheet weight calculation before buying: weight (kg) = length (m) × width (m) × thickness (mm) × density, where density is about 7.9–8.0 for austenitic grades and about 7.7 for ferritic grades, as per Jindal Stainless published data. How many kg in 8x4 sheet? It depends on thickness, work it out with the stainless steel weight calculator or read the SS sheet weight chart.

On form, sheet vs coil vs patta: full sheets work best for low-volume, mixed jobs; stainless steel coils handle high-volume roll-forming and blanking; SS patta and strips are suited to edging, utensil and narrow-width work. Cut to size SS sheet saves workshop time and cuts down on scrap. Relinox arranges SS sheet cutting job work on request, at an additional charge; see fabrication and engineering supply.

Minimum order SS sheet? Relinox has no MOQ. No MOQ stainless sheet rule to worry about, so a small quantity SS sheet order works just fine. Order more, though, and the rates get better.

Step 5: Buy from an authorized channel

Re-rolled or mixed bazaar stock is where most grade substitution happens. Buy from an authorized channel instead, and your sheet ties back to a real mill heat and certificate.

"Jindal" here means Jindal Stainless Limited (JSL), the stainless flat-products producer, not Jindal SAW, Jindal (India) Ltd, JSW Steel or JSPL (carbon steel / pipes), and not SAIL Salem material.

Relinox is a Jindal Stainless MoU partner, an authorized channel and Jindal Stainless distributor for flat products. If you are looking for a Jindal authorized dealer, ask any seller for proof of channel and an MTC; read about our Jindal MoU partnership.

Where to buy: SS sheet dealer, stockist, trader or supplier near me?

An SS sheet dealer, SS sheet stockist or SS sheet trader can all be perfectly honest. The label tells you less than three answers do: whose mill the material came from, whether the MTC comes with it, and whether you'll get a GST invoice. Searching SS sheet supplier near me helps with freight, but a distant authorized channel often beats a nearby unverified one. Comparing a Jindal SS sheet dealer, Jindal stainless sheet stockist or Jindal sheet trader? Ask for MoU or authorized-channel proof. Step 6: Verify the material: MTC, markings and tests

A mill test certificate check sits at the heart of what to check when buying stainless steel sheet. MTC kya hota hai? It's the mill's certificate for a heat or coil, covering grade, standard, chemistry and test results. Always ask for SS sheet with test certificate, and match it field by field.

Field on MTCWhat to match againstRed flag
Producer nameJindal StainlessUnnamed mill, photocopy with no producer
Heat / coil numberMarking on the sheet, coil tag or packetNumber not found on the material
GradeYour order and invoice"SS" or "304 type" with no exact grade
StandardASTM A240 or IS 6911 as orderedNo standard named
Thickness and widthMicrometer reading and tape on deliverySize range that does not cover your sheet
Chemical compositionGrade limits per ASTM A240 / IS 6911Nickel or chromium below grade limits
Mechanical resultsTensile, yield, elongation, hardness per the standardBlank or "satisfactory" with no values

Full walkthrough: mill test certificates. On how to check genuine Jindal sheet (asli Jindal sheet kaise pehchane): match the MTC heat number against the marking on the sheet or coil, and buy through an authorized channel. A magnet test proves nothing. 202 and J4 are non-magnetic, same as 304, and cold-worked 304 can still pull a magnet. See how to identify real SS 304.

Step 7: GST invoice and HSN code

A pakka bill SS sheet purchase comes with a proper GST invoice. That means seller and buyer GSTIN, grade, thickness and size, weight, rate, the HSN code on invoice, the GST amount, and an e-way bill where the consignment requires one. For the SS sheet GST rate and the correct HSN for flat-rolled stainless, check SS HSN codes and GST. Take a kachha bill instead, and you're left with no input credit and no traceability if the grade turns out wrong.

Step 8: Rate, freight and delivery inspection

Why SS rate changes daily: stainless prices track nickel and alloy surcharges. The nickel price effect filters down to dealer rates within days, so sellers confirm the rate on the day of order.

FactorEffect on rate
Nickel / LME and alloy surchargeMoves the base rate daily, most on high-nickel grades
Grade316/316L > 304 > 200-series/J4 > 430/409M, broadly by nickel and molybdenum content
ThicknessVery thin and very thick sizes usually carry a premium per kg
FinishBA, No.4, hairline, mirror and PVD cost more than 2B / No.1
QuantityLarger quantities get better rates
Cut-to-sizeCutting charged additionally
FreightExtra over ex-Delhi rate; depends on distance and load
GSTExtra, shown on the invoice

Looking for SS sheet price per kg, the SS sheet rate today, or a Jindal SS sheet price list? Check today's indicative prices. You'll find SS 304 sheet price, SS 202 sheet price, and price by thickness there too. Ex-Delhi rate meaning: that's the rate for material sitting at our Delhi stock point. SS sheet freight and transport charges, plus GST, get added on top. Don't just look at the base rate; always compare the landed cost.

SS sheet delivery inspection: things to check before buying SS sheet is final

Things to check before buying SS sheet don't stop at payment, so check sheet on delivery before the transporter leaves:

  • Thickness by micrometer at several points, and size by tape
  • Finish matches the order; PVC film intact with no lifting or tears
  • Edges and corners: no dents, folds or scratches under the PVC film
  • Heat number on the material matches the MTC
  • Count and weight match the invoice and e-way bill

For SS sheet storage, keep sheets dry, off the floor and away from mild-steel grinding. To avoid rust contamination in workshop areas, use separate tools and wheels for stainless.

Common mistakes buying SS sheet

Buyers trip up in a few predictable ways. The common mistakes buying SS sheet, and the usual SS sheet fraud patterns:

  • 202 sold as 304, the commonest substitution; see 202 vs 304.
  • Assuming a gauge means the same mm everywhere instead of ordering in mm.
  • Ignoring finish and film, then losing hours polishing scratches.
  • Accepting material with no MTC or an MTC whose heat number is not on the sheet.
  • Taking a kachha bill to save GST, then losing input credit and traceability.
  • Comparing base rates while forgetting freight and GST.

FAQ

How do I buy stainless steel sheet for fabrication?

Fix the grade, finish, thickness and size first. Decide whether you need full sheets or cut-to-size pieces. Buy only through an authorized Jindal channel, and make sure you get the MTC along with a GST invoice. Once that's settled, confirm the day's rate and the freight.

Which grade is best for general fabrication?

304 is the default austenitic grade. Use 316/316L where chlorides or chemicals are present, 202/J4 for cost-sensitive indoor work, and 430 where magnetic, nickel-free sheet is acceptable.

What is the standard SS sheet size in India?

1250×2500 mm (8x4 ft) shows up the most; 1250×3050 mm (4x10) and 1500×3000 mm (5x10) get plenty of use too.

Is SS sheet sold per kg or per sheet?

It's sold by the kilogram. Sheet weight comes from size times thickness times density, so run the numbers through the weight calculator to convert sheets to kg.

Is there a minimum order quantity?

No, Relinox doesn't set a minimum order quantity. Order more and the rate improves; cut-to-size pieces cost extra.

What should a mill test certificate show?

Producer, heat or coil number, grade, standard (ASTM A240 / IS 6911), dimensions, chemical composition and mechanical test results. All of it must match the markings on the material.

How can I tell the sheet is genuine Jindal?

Match the MTC heat number against the sheet or coil marking, and buy only through an authorized channel. A magnet test by itself proves nothing.

Why does the SS sheet rate change daily?

Stainless prices move with nickel and alloy surcharges, so dealers confirm the rate on the day of the order. Relinox posts dated indicative ranges on its prices page.

Are GST and freight included in the quoted rate?

No, Relinox rates are quoted ex-Delhi. GST and freight come on top, and both show up separately on the GST invoice.

How long does delivery take to my city?

Material dispatches from Ajmeri Gate, Delhi by road: typically same day within NCR, 1–2 days across the northern belt, 2–4 days to west and central India, and 3–5 days to the south, east and northeast. The exact time is confirmed with your order.
